MUSIC EDUCATION ADVOCACY

Music Empowers Foundation: this organization supports non-profit music education programs that support at-risk and underprivileged children; read about my dream on the "About Me" page!  Who knows, perhaps this foundation will, one day, turn their gaze on Harmonics School of Music, serving the children and families of Baker City...

ARTICLES

Music Education and Childhood Brain Development - a fantastic article that, only a bit over a decade later, summarizes what my 9-month undergraduate project proposed: music education in early childhood gives children who receive it an academic edge over those who don't.  Although some of the hype about "Beethoven Babies" and "Little Mozarts" is just that - hype - there is a lot of truth underlying the Psychology Today articles on the subject that are dumbed down for the masses.

The Science of Mental Fitness - a very interesting article on the neurological effects of imagined practice...no, that let's no one off the practice hook, but nice try!

Musicians are Probably Smarter Than the Rest of Us - From the article:  "Want to keep your mind healthy and sharp throughout your life? Pick up an instrument. A new study found that musicians might have brains that function better than their peers well into old age. Bet you wish you stuck with those piano lessons after all."  It's not too late!

15 Things You Need to Know About Supporting Your Child Learning to Play The Piano - Parents, this one's for you.

STUDENT RESOURCES

The Piano Student - A Free Music Resource Directory.  This site has free, downloadable student music (great for when you've completed your daily practice and are just compelled to do more!), coloring sheet for the kiddos, music learning apps for your phone or tablet, wallpaper for your computer...you really must check it out!

All About That Bass - a fun parody video to help you learn the notes of the bass clef, as well as to help you get some boogie on!
